PRP and ESP are not interchangeable output figures. They describe different operating duties. The correct rating depends on the load profile, expected operation, utility availability and the conditions stated in the current manufacturer datasheet.
Generator-set datasheets often show more than one power rating. PRP and ESP are among the most common. Selecting the highest number without reading the associated duty can lead to using a generator outside the conditions for which that output was assigned.
Why generator sets have several ratings
The engine, alternator, cooling system and auxiliary components are affected by load level, load variation and operating duration. A set used during an occasional utility failure has a different duty from a generator that regularly acts as the primary power source. Rating terminology provides a common basis for describing these duties.
ISO 8528-1 classifies generator-set applications and ratings, including Emergency Standby Power, Prime Rated Power, Limited-Time Power and Continuous Operating Power. Manufacturers may specify additional product conditions, so the current datasheet for the exact model remains decisive.
ESP: emergency standby power
ESP is typically associated with a variable load during failure of the normal power source. It must not be interpreted as an unrestricted continuous rating. Expected operating duration, load profile, frequency of use and the manufacturer's conditions must be checked. Any overload capability must be taken only from the current model documentation.
PRP: prime rated power
PRP is used for a variable-load duty in which the generator set acts as a primary or regularly used power source. It is not simply a lower number that can be applied without limits. Average loading, operating pattern, maintenance, ambient conditions and the manufacturer's definition still apply. Overload capability should only be included when explicitly stated for the model and duty.
LTP and COP
Some datasheets also show LTP and COP. LTP covers limited-time operation under defined conditions, while COP refers to continuous operation at a defined constant load. These labels should never be transferred from one manufacturer or model to another without checking the supporting documentation.
Portable generators may use a different combination of ratings from industrial diesel or gas generator sets. Compare values only when the product type, rating basis and duty are equivalent.
A rating is not a complete sizing result
The correct rating category does not by itself prove that a generator can support the installation. Motor starting, load steps, UPS systems, harmonics, permitted voltage and frequency response, altitude and ambient temperature may change the required selection. Nameplate power and dynamic performance must be reviewed together.
How to compare datasheets
Compare the rating designation and standard basis, kVA and kW, assumed power factor, voltage, frequency, phases, duty, ambient conditions, documented derating, engine, alternator and controller. Only include overload capability when it is expressly stated. PRP and ESP values on German Generator product pages are taken from the currently approved manufacturer datasheets. Exact ISO operating-hour or average-load limits are published only after they have been checked against the brands actually offered and the then-current edition of the standard.

Is ESP always higher than PRP?
It is higher on many models, but this is not a universal selection rule. The model-specific values and conditions apply.
Can a generator operate continuously at ESP?
ESP normally describes an emergency standby duty and should not be treated as a continuous rating without confirmation.
Does PRP mean unlimited use at any load?
No. PRP describes a defined variable-load duty. Manufacturer conditions, average load, maintenance and site conditions remain relevant.
