AMF is the detection of a mains failure and automatic start/stop control of the generator set. ATS is the transfer equipment that moves the load between utility and generator supply. Control, switching, protection, interlocking and return logic must be engineered as one system.
ATS and AMF are often mentioned together in automatic standby systems, but they do not describe exactly the same function. Separating the terms helps define the controller, transfer equipment and protection concept correctly.
What does AMF mean?
AMF means Automatic Mains Failure. An AMF-capable controller typically monitors the utility supply. If it detects a failure or a configured out-of-limit condition, it initiates generator starting after the specified delay. Once generator voltage and frequency are stable, the load can be enabled.
What does ATS mean?
ATS means Automatic Transfer Switch. The transfer equipment connects the load either to utility power or to the generator set. It must be selected for current, voltage, pole count, short-circuit duty, utilisation category and the site earthing arrangement.
ATS may refer to the complete transfer assembly, while AMF refers more specifically to monitoring and start logic. The functions can be distributed differently between controller and switchgear.
What is the automatic transfer sequence?
- The controller monitors utility voltage and frequency.
- A fault is confirmed for the configured delay.
- The generator starts and reaches stable operating values.
- The transfer equipment disconnects the load from utility and connects it to the generator.
- After stable utility return, the load is transferred back.
- The generator may complete a cooling period before stopping.
Actual timing and conditions are project-specific. Critical loads may need additional ride-through or uninterruptible systems.
Why do interlocking and protection matter?
In a conventional open-transition system, utility and generator sources must not be paralleled unintentionally. Mechanical and electrical interlocks plus coordinated control logic prevent invalid switching states. Protection devices, earthing and neutral switching must suit the installation.
Transfer equipment must be designed and installed by qualified electrical personnel in accordance with applicable rules, utility requirements and component documentation.

Are ATS and AMF the same?
No. AMF covers mains monitoring and automatic start/stop control; ATS is the automatic transfer equipment. The two functions work together in a standby system.
Does an ATS transfer without interruption?
Not necessarily. A conventional open transition includes an interruption. No-break requirements need an appropriately engineered overall system.
Can every generator controller operate an AMF system?
Only if its measurement, inputs, outputs and configuration support the required AMF functions.
